Consultant Specialist in Paediatric Allergy and Immunology – NSW

Dr. Mahila Namasivayam is a consultant specialist in Paediatric Allergy and Immunology and an Adjunct Lecturer at the University of New South Wales, Sydney (UNSW). She was awarded her medical degree at the University of Adelaide and her Master of Medicine (Research) by the University of New South Wales.

Dr. Namasivayam completed her specialist training at Sydney Children’s Hospital and is a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (FRACP). 

Dr. Namasivayam has extensive experience in the care of babies through to adolescents with a range of allergic and immune disorders.  Her special interests include paediatric food allergy, anaphylaxis and allergic rhinitis (hay fever). 

Dr. Namasivayam is leading bench to bedside translational research projects at Sydney Children’s Hospital in collaboration with laboratory teams locally and internationally to develop more effective solutions for the diagnosis of children with food allergy.  She is also actively involved in national efforts by the Australasian Society of Clinical Immunology and Allergy (ASCIA) and the National Allergy Centre for Excellence (NACE) on improving treatments for food allergies. 

Dr. Namasivayam is an active Committee Member of the ASCIA Anaphylaxis, Paediatric and Education Committees and Co-Chair of the Sydney Paediatric and Adult Allergy Network (SPAAN). 

Dr. Namasivayam recognises the importance of training and welfare of future generations of doctors and has represented the junior medical staff on local Medical Education Committees and the State Postgraduate Training Council.  She is involved with lecturing and examining undergraduate UNSW medical students and teaching and mentoring postgraduate paediatric FRACP trainees.  She has published peer-reviewed guidelines on the management approach of children with immunodeficiency and has authored educational materials for primary care physicians, patients and families on food allergy management in children.  Dr. Namasivayam has presented her clinical and research work on food allergy, eczema, immunodeficiency, and periodic fever syndromes at local, national, and international conferences and this work has been recognised with awards.
