Research Opportunity: Food Protein-Induced Enterocolitis Syndrome (FPIES) in Adults Study

Do you have abdominal pain, vomiting or diarrhoea several hours after eating certain foods?

Walter and Eliza Hall Institute WEHI and The Royal Melbourne Hospital are seeking adults aged 18 to 80 to take part in a study that aims to improve how FPIES is diagnosed.

FPIES is a condition where an abnormal immune reaction to food causes symptoms such as abdominal pain, vomiting or diarrhoea. The research team is developing a blood test to detect this immune response. The aim is to make FPIES easier to diagnose and to reduce reliance on food challenges, which can trigger symptoms.

The study is open to adults who:

  1. are aged 18 to 80 years
  2. experience abdominal pain, vomiting or diarrhoea 1 to 6 hours after eating specific foods
  3. are able to attend the Royal Melbourne Hospital in Parkville, Victoria

You can take part whether or not you have previously been diagnosed with FPIES.

Participation involves one visit to the Clinical Trials Centre at the Royal Melbourne Hospital for a supervised food challenge and blood tests. The tests will help researchers understand what happens in the immune system before and after the food challenge.
