TGA action on Andrographis: What you need to know

You may have seen recent recalls of products containing Andrographis paniculata. This is because the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) has taken action after monitoring reports of anaphylaxis to this ingredient.

What is Andrographis?

Andrographis paniculata, sometimes called “King of Bitters”, is a herbal ingredient commonly found in cold, flu and immune support labelled supplements. They are often sold in pharmacies, supermarkets and health food stores, however, can also be purchased online.

Why is it making headlines?

After years of monitoring reports of anaphylaxis, including a fatality in 2024, the TGA has removed Andrographis from the list of ingredients permitted in “low-risk” listed medicines (for example, vitamins, minerals and herbal substances).

Products that are recalled cannot be sold, however, there may still be products containing Andrographis available for purchase as recalls are currently voluntary.

Why is this important?

Using a product containing Andrographis can cause a severe allergic reaction, even in people with no history of allergy and even if they’ve taken the product before without problems.

Symptoms of anaphylaxis require urgent medical attention.

Knowing the signs and symptoms of an allergic reaction and knowing what to do is important.

What products are affected?

Consumers may notice some familiar products disappearing from shelves. While recalled products can no longer be sold, some products containing Andrographis may still be available.

What should you do?

Check the ingredient list of any supplements you use and look for:

  • Andrographis paniculata
  • Andrographis

If you have a supplement containing Andrographis:

  • Stop using the product.
  • Check whether it is subject to a recall.
  • Dispose of unwanted medicines safely through your local pharmacy.
