Medical identification jewellery

Allergy & Anaphylaxis Australia recommends medical identification jewellery for people at risk of anaphylaxis.

Why?

  • If you have collapsed, are unable to or have difficulty speaking, information about your allergy is available on your bracelet or necklace so the people helping you can read it.
  • If people helping you are aware your symptoms may be due to a severe allergic reaction, they can look to see if you have your adrenaline injector with you and give it. Health care professionals including paramedics will understand what is happening quickly if you cannot speak but you are wearing something that tells them you have a severe allergy.

Latex and drug (medication allergy)

  • It is very important to wear medical identification jewellery if you have a drug or latex allergy. This is so people treating you for any injury or illness where you are unable to tell them about your allergies can avoid using latex or the medication you are allergic to, for example, if you are injured in a car accident, have a head injury or are unconscious.

Insect allergy

  • Anaphylaxis to insect bites or stings often occurs more quickly than food allergy and is more likely to lead to collapse. Therefore, it is very important for people with insect allergy to wear medical identification jewellery as they may collapse and be unable to tell the people helping them about their allergy.
