Anaphylaxis and your teeth

People with cow’s milk (dairy) allergy should tell their dentist at each visit that they have a milk allergy due to the risk of anaphylaxis to dental products that includes milk. People with milk allergy should avoid dental products containing Recaldent™ also known as CPP-ACP (casein phosphopeptide-amorphous calcium phosphate), which is made from cow’s milk protein.

When visiting the dentist, ALWAYS:

  • Tell the dentist about any allergy you may have at every visit, especially allergies to foods, medications, or latex
  • Always take your adrenaline (epinephrine) injector (such as EpiPen® or Anapen®) and ASCIA Action Plan for Anaphylaxis to every appointment

It is important that people with a milk allergy avoid medicated toothpastes such as Tooth Mousse® and chewing gum that has milk protein. Always read the ingredients of dental and mouthcare used at home as they may have food allergens, such as milk. Sometimes, milk is listed by other names, such as casein, Casein-Phosphopeptide (CPP), Recaldent™, or CPP-ACP.
